Am I seeing things or has HackerNews changed its font, at least on the article pages? If so, any details about what typeface it was changed from/to and the motivations behind it?

It has not changed it, it's still "Verdana, Geneva, sans-serif;"

Maybe something wiped Verdana from your machine?

I used to love Verdana and used it everywhere back in high school...
