Ask HN: Displaced in Maui, working on a 'crazy idea'. Any words of wisdom?

Maui is way too reliant on tourism. I believe we could support a startup ecosystem here that spans agriculture, finance, tourism, real estate, and wellness.

Why couldn't it? Does anyone have any better ideas?

Just seems like more trouble than it's worth. You're disconnected from the contiguous 48 states logistically and physically, located in a unique timezone and isolated from massive talent pools. I don't think the advantages of being on an island will necessarily sweeten the deal, but then again I've never been to Maui.
