Completely right. Light and day between candid and mocking cultures at places I've been, eg as a consultant. The mocking places have not been the productive or effective ones.
(Right now, as an ageing PhD student I'm immersed in good culture, and can rock up at seminars on interesting topics that I nominally know nothing about and participate or at least zonk my brain for a bit!)
