Ask HN: Transition to Sales Engineer

I'm 41 and have been a successful software engineer, contracting in Europe till now (Banking/Fintech/startups). I've worked in Dublin, Belgium, a stint in Dubai, and currently Zurich.

Finanically I'm fine to take a step back, and would love to keep leveraging my tech skills, but grow in a new area. I've grown a lot in my social skills in the past 5 years, and a lot of our circle of friends are also in sales.

Is the sales engineer role what I should be aiming for? And if so would love to hear similar stories, anyone that has made this transition?

I know by the time I'm 50 I don't want to be whiteboarding anymore to get a job, but perhaps there are other paths to take - I just know growing into team lead/pm is not that enticing to me.
