Can anyone provide the difference between marketing and advertising? I lost my notes -- there was a formal definition IIRC.

(This issue has been a plague on social media since the site I used to brag "I can put you on the front page" of went bankrupt. Own your biases!)

Marketing is anything that's for promoting sales, while advertising is running ads. Advertising is a subset of marketing. Word of mouth marketing (eg. refer a friend and you both get $5 off) is marketing, but not advertising.
Marketing traditionally encompasses: price, product, placement (distribution) and promotion.

PR, advertising and sales fall under different branches of promotion.

It seems that there are no real consequences here. What's the point? It's already a requirement in the US that anyone that is being paid to promote something is required to disclose this information, but that doesn't happen all the much in reality already.
