Ask HN: Is Counter.dev down?

3 points by thih9 ↗ HN
I’ve been having trouble accessing the site for a day or two. I use counter.dev for some of my hobby projects.

I couldn’t find any status page or any thread on other social media, so I’m asking here.

Does anyone know more?

Just curious, why aren't you using something like Cloudflare, Vercel or some other proven website for website hits?

Rather than what looks to be an unproven pet project of some developer. If nobody is paying for it, there are no guarantees of uptime or support.

I don’t mind using a free tier service for a hobby project, I’m fine losing past data too.

For me counter.dev is way more simple to set up and use than what you mentioned. I have cloudflare as well.

Having moved from Google Analytics to Counter: Counter is open source and minimal. I'm not sure what kind of performance impact Google Analytics had on my blog, but I knew it was less, and I knew that the data counter tracked felt like less of a privacy issue for my users than the excessive proprietary tracking setup from Google. I also love that there aren't 380 different pages of nothing to look at, I only see the info I actually want to see and I get out of there instead of staring at my stats.

I use managed hosting for my blog and didn't want to host and manage my own analytics backend, so all of those tools were also, obviously, a no-go.

And my blog is a personal project, I'm never, ever going to pay for analytics, that's insane.

I don't know why I would care about how "proven" an analytics tool is, considering how little analytics matter to me in the first place. It's just cute to get an idea of how many people are looking at my blog.

It's pay what you want. The project is running for three years already, let's see how things go with time.

Apologies for the long downtime. The issue is being resolved, see here for updates:

All is up and running again.
