"Sometimes you just sit in front of it for a week in despair, looking for the error."
Miniatur Wunderland is a jaw-dropping, enourmous model rail/road/air layout in Hamburg [1]. For 10 years they've been working on a new F1 racing layout based on Monaco. There have been... challenges. The linked video (English captions) on their Youtube channel discusses recent progess, especially obscure gremlins and glitches. I found it comforting to listen a while to someone else pull his hair out.
"For three weeks we have been looking for the reason why the cars just stop. Is it a software failure that we don't notice after all? There is no error message, but the result is crap." "When these errors occur so rarely you need to know how to provoke them." Hardware problem in a bad place: "We don't know exactly how to fix it, so I changed the software for now" with some hack details. Spoiler: toward the end of the video they got a lucky break and it looks like they know what's causing phantom-car-stop.
