This essay was written over 20 years ago, and has aged remarkably well.
It anticipates (and provides a very actionable mental model for) smartphone/screen addiction, and the rise of LLMs and other technology that claims to replicate/replace human cognitive functions.
Its a lovely read for me, because in the quest to teach digital self
defence I've long realised that a sure way to communicate to most
ordinary people what must be said about cybersecurity, cryptography,
systems.... is via literature, poetry, drama and film.
An ongoing quest for me is to find short, powerful and accessible
pieces. The romantics are good; E.M Forster, Mary Shelley, H.G
Wells.... The Greeks are useful too, but one has to go carefully so as
not to scare-off people. Wrote about it here some moons ago;
