Yeah, um... I'll take the other side on both those positions.
And I claim that he's pulling those numbers (10x and 10,000x) out of thin air. And if he's doing that, he's probably pulling the dates out of thin air also.
If he's right, though... improving by a factor of 1000 in 10 years means, essentially, doubling in intelligence every year. If it can keep that up for an additional decade or two... that's both impressive and scary. If true, which I don't think it is.
If nothing else, it would make a good science fiction story, with the AI getting noticeably smarter as the story goes on.
