Ask HN: What Defines a Beta?

Is there a definitive definition? Is it almost production ready but working out bugs, is it a percentage like 50% or 80%? Should it be feature complete?

If so then what defines an Alpha release?

Is there some authoritative source and defintion for something so commonly referred to across our industry?
