Lots of people want to work remotely, and the pool of applicants for each job can be much larger because of the lack of geographic restrictions.

So you're facing more competition than you usually would for a fully office based job.

Yes, right! Make sense. Without geographical restriction competition increased too much. But stil how one can stand out here? It's only selection based on technical expertise right?
No job is on that alone. You need to be someone they can trust, be hard working, be smart, be in for the long haul ... I could go on.
In the US, it's actually probably more about human connections than technical expertise alone. If you're reasonably qualified, having a connection is way more important than a good resume or such.
