Ask HN: Streaming Player Replacement for Roku?
Any suggestions on a streaming player that doesn't collect data and is easy to deal with? I'd like to have a replacement for a Roku 2. Something small, low power draw 5w, ethernet, hdmi, netflix, youtube, IR remote, and maybe play videos from USB.
I've seen some mini computers with Windows and Kodi that seem do be able to do this. But they also seem to have a lot of extras that might be confusing or a hassle for some people.
Please let me know if you have some suggestions to check out.

That won't stop the data collection but it should mitigate how useful it is. Maybe?
I think this is a valid setup. I don't even have a CC associated with roku (not sure why, but never paid for anything anyway).
Until recently i needed no email and in the last reset the GUID almost forced an email. But if you search online, they show ways to get around the email requirement.
Also, don't forget to change the DNS server on your wifi router - and maybe a VPN? - so they can't ID you by IP or whatever nefarious voodoo they do.
At some point of a factory reset, my 10 yr old roku got smart and started self-updating.
Its beyond frustrating and i don't have the technical expertise to PiHole it into oblivion in less than half-day.
