I was looking for the etymology of these two terms which I had thought to be synonyms. As an avid screenshotter myself, I never knew the subtleties that differentiate it from screengrabbing...
Gibberish.

Screenshot: Any image of any screen (noun), or the creation of such an image (verb)

Screengrab: Not a thing. lmao.

It's called the screenshot tool for most operating systems, so using the term screengrab doesnt match what is commonly used.
This is just as pedantic as the jif v. gif. But I can't help myself.

If your going to claim to be authority on this at least provide some citations.

Windows has a tool called "Snipping Tool" which also went by the name "Clipping Tool" and "Snip *& Sketch". Of course we have the Print Screen key. [1]

Mac had a "Grab" app which dates back to NeXTSTEP. [2] So it is conceivable that someone would refer to it as a "screengrab". Personally I've never heard anyone say this.

I don't think either application used the term "screengrab".

Microsoft's own documentation [3] uses the term "screenshot" regardless of type (i.e. full window, rectangular area, etc.). Apple as well. [4]
