What to Do After Google Domains Was Acquired by Squarespace?

5 points by Wasserpuncher ↗ HN
Hi everyone,

A few months ago, I registered a domain through Google Domains. Recently, I learned that Google Domains was acquired by Squarespace. I'm now wondering what steps I should take. Should I stick with Squarespace, or would it be advisable to consider changing domain registrars?

I'd appreciate any insights or advice from those who have experience with this situation or any recommendations for domain registrars.

Thank you for your help!

You can transfer your domain to GoDaddy for a fee. Your term balance transfers with you. Unlock domain, get auto code, call GoDaddy, initiate transfer. Who is your hosting provider?
No, don't go with GoDaddy.
For transparency it looks like this user works for GoDaddy based on a previous HN comment where they link to their GoDaddy email address. My personal recommendation based on customer experience and privacy is Namecheap or Porkbun.
You can transfer your domain to the registrar of your choice for a fee. The fee usually includes an additional year of ownership.

See this thread for recommended registrars. GoDaddy is not one of the top recommendations.

This is seriously terrible advice. GoDaddy is shady AF. There's a reason their reputation is so bad.

Friends don't recommend GoDaddy for anything.

Don't use godaddy. Thank me later.
I am using NameCheap. I have used GoDaddy in the past, then changed to the (GoDaddy brands) "Domainz4Less", then "Domains Priced Right", but their mailbox price exploded, so with NameCheap I find reasonable pricing.
I buy my domains from Squarespace, I'm likely paying a premium but I've found their service to be good l.
I recommend Gandi as they are such a huge player in domains, often resellinh their services to big companies like AWS. There's no crap with them. They just sell domain registrations.
They got bought recently and increased the prices of email mailboxes too much for what they are. I wouldn’t bet on them.
If you search here https://hn.algolia.com/ you can see previous discussions where people recommend domain registrars. AFAICT, Porkbun seems to be serious and popular. Personally I stick with Dynadot.
Will google automatically move the domains to square space?

Or does it have to be done manually?
