Facebook seems pretty incompetent. They've intermittently not managed to even deliver push notifications for messages for the past ~6 months or so, to the point of causing some awkward situations when I see a message multiple days too late.

Considering the ethics of fb as a company this is probably an intentional attempt at increasing "engagement". I wish everyone just switched to Signal or something.

Mobile-first has become mobile-only, especially for apps that love to abuse smartphone permissions to collect data about you. This just feels like a natural extension of that priority.
Don’t worry, their mobile app can also be pretty shit.
Sounds like a 'feature' to drive people to the inefficient native app. What chiselers.
Embarassing. Do they not have testing, code review, qa, guidance, mentoring, leadership, or even basic monitoring, alerting and production support? Like what gives.
Recently they removed Messenger Lite for Android. Then I found out you cannot use the messenger site on a mobile browser. Or chat via the Facebook site on mobile browser. That was the kick to stop using this product and move my friends away.
