Ask HN: Thoughts on Odin Programming Language

3 points by masfoobar ↗ HN
We have a number of languages over the years that are C and C++ replacements/alternatives.

Rust, Zig and Go seem to be the 3 popular ones at this time. There are other options like Odin but don't always get mentioned alonside them.

When I look on HN, the last post on Odin was 3 to 5 months ago. Rust, Go and Zig was less than 9 hours ago.

I am interested to hear peoples opinions of Odin. - Have they tried it? - Do you think of Odin when Rust, Go and/or Zig is mentioned? - Views of comparisons or differences in real code? - etc.

In my view, I think Odin is seperated from the 3 above because it is given that reputation of 'its for games' rather than being a true contender as a general-purpose programming language.

Another language placed in a similar category to Odin is Johnathon Blows Jai* language. However, last I read, it is not released to the public so I would expect HN topics on Jai every 3-5 months. Odin, however, is right here.

Odins killer app, for example, is EmberGen. It is a powerful real-time 'fluid simulator' written entirely in Odin. So it have a large application in production!

[Note - this is not to win me over. Just interested in a friendly conversation on the topic. I just think it deserves it bit more popularity]
