Surprised to hear it. I still get quite a bit of engagement on X, certainly have not seen a decline in the past year. Also, a few folks I follow on X, even if they claimed to "have moved to Fediverse", have all quietly come back and started to post on X again.
I joined Mastodon myself in the past year, and at least so far I have not been able to see much engagement there, though I am still trying to figure it out. The biggest issue I see is lack of cross-server search, aside from by tag, but also just not enough post activity. Maybe I am still not following the right people.
I really hate it when people use graphs with non-zero axises. The initial graph in the article makes it look like downloads have dropped to zero, when they have actually dropped by about a third. Downloads were volatile, but hovered around 15M, and now they are around 10M. But if you didn't actually look at the labels on the Y axis, you wouldn't know that.
The loss of about a third of the downloads is still significant.
All social networks have seriously declined in usage. This article is crap. No word on how Facebook, Instagram, etc have performed. Only briefly mentions TikTok growing but that's normal, it's relatively new.
What I've seen is the opposite: a lot more Twitter usage now that censorship is off.
