Ask HN: Best Resources for Understanding Modern Web Stack?

1 points by gnatman ↗ HN
I'm working on a product idea for a market that I've been working in for the last 10 years or so. I've always worked on the biz dev side of things but am not scared of the technical side.

I think it'll be too time consuming to build this application myself, but if I hire someone to do it I still want to understand exactly how it works. What are they best resources for understanding a modern JS stack- like React, Node.js, MongoDB, AWS, APIs, authentication... all that stuff.

I'm open to anything from structured hands-on bootcamp, to architecture courses, to books, to youtube channels, etc. Thanks in advance!

First ... you need to define what you mean by "understanding a modern JS stack" (and then why do you have two different JS frameworks listed?)

Second, what makes you think all of what you listed would even be applicable to whatever it is you want to build? Maybe it is ... maybe it is not.

Third, how much of an "understanding" are you looking to acquire? Surface level? Able to take over the project when your contractor/employee/partner moves on? Somewhere in between?

Depending on your desire to learn (and how much you need to learn for this project) .. you could get away with as little as a couple hours of YouTube - or need 2000+ hours of videos, classroom, and hands-on time

Both ends of the spectrum are quite doable - but you need to know what you are looking for before any suggestions are going to be helpful :)

To your first two questions- I hope that with some education and hard work I'll be equipped to confidently respond! :) I thought React was a common front-end and Node.js a common backend? Perhaps that tells you just how little I know!

I used those examples based on the features I'll need in my application (webcam capture, onscreen drawing canvas, screen-capture of the sessions, storing and sending the result via email or text). I figure I'll need some front end, some back end, and some database. Again, I'm probably just revealing my own ignorance here.

ChatGPT is your best resource, just talk with it and ask it to teach you
