i see a future where ad-filled facebook, ahem, meta operated app store which is heavily subsidized like amazon fire store was in order to extract oh so analytics data on both android and IOS.
same for google moving play store over to IOS with the same intentions.
my only hope is f-droid will get more attention, it will get better and more resistant to "pressures", same for small projects like aurora store which would not need to hide behind enemy lines
question. wouldn't amazon Kindle fall into gatekeeper because they only permit amazon store on their devices and do not allow easy jailbreaking and stuff.?
If I have a diverging product where it has unique and different features for each platform, is that one product or multiple products with the same name?
In this case the product is Safari and Apple in their own marketing literature has promoted that common and consistent feature availability across all its platforms
> "As Apple explains on its website, all these features allow Safari to work seamlessly across devices: 'Same Safari. Different device: Safari works seamlessly and syncs your passwords, bookmarks, history, tabs, and more across Mac, iPad, iPhone, and Apple Watch.'"
I wish apple would just repackage and sell android in the EU. It wasn't bad enough the EU forced the inferior USB-C on the world, now they wanr shitty apps being exposed to people who are paying extra for quality.
I don't think ios is more secure but it is reliable and pleasant to use. That's the experience I want and pay for. My prefernece as a consumer is being taken away to appease the ideology of tyrants.
It's like with open source how some think every software should be free and opensource, like I use Linux and all but I also like closed source apple and windows. If you want free and open source you have options. If you want phones that let you install arbitrary apk's/apps you have that option but why are you forcing your prefence on others?
Tyranny by any other name. As if it would be more acceptable because it is popular when the people with the opinions refuse to vote with their wallets.
"Meat is not to be sold at stores because we can't afford it and it offends vegetarians"
Enjoy android or the platform of your choice then? I you too are not so self-centered that you can't fathom others having a different taste and opinion than you.
If you have to tell people you definitely know what you're talking about in the same breath you call them stupid- then i think we can just assume the opposite of what you say in all cases
Oh, so you're an Android developer and an iOS user, huh? That's quite the rare combination. I'm sure you're very knowledgeable about both platforms, but that doesn't mean you have to be so condescending.
If iOS is so unreliable and unpleasant to use, why do you keep using it? Maybe you're just a masochist. Or maybe you're just afraid to admit that you're wrong.
> Android developer and an iOS user, huh? That's quite the rare combination.
It’s not. I am in the field and it’s totally not so, especially if you are talking about USA. Besides de-facto dev machine (in android dev world as well) is a Mac, so probably that’s a contributing cause, but anyway I have no large scale data on this.
> I'm sure you're very knowledgeable about both platforms
Really? Why would you have that doubt? I use both the phones extensively for multiple hours a day - at least every working day. I read about the feature set, releases, read dev docs etc of both the platforms regularly - and also do extensive discussion among team (the mobile team) as well how our competitors are using the mobile ecosystem.
So yeah I actually know what I am talking about. And you? That I am not sure :)
> you have to be so condescending
Ah, I don’t think I was. Apologies if it came across that way. It was just a knee-jerk of a shitty response to a very similar comment and I am totally fine with that. If I have to reply to a similar comment in future it’d be in the same tone or mo response at all; I should have gone for the latter.
> Maybe you're just a masochist.
See, now you are being an idiot. God, HN is full of us ;-)
> Or maybe you're just afraid to admit that you're wrong.
Awww. What an insightful twist of a comment. Genius
Ah yes, I too am still recovering from the huge step backwards of suddenly being able to charge my laptop and phone using the same charging cable.
> now they wanr shitty apps being exposed to people who are paying extra for quality
Oh boy, you should avoid the App Store – not sure if you've noticed, but they have a bad app or two in there! But I'll share an advanced strategy on how to deal with these with you: Just don't install them.
> My prefernece as a consumer is being taken away to appease the ideology of tyrants.
Selling iPhones in Europe is entirely optional for Apple. But if they choose to, they better comply with local consumer laws.
> Ah yes, I too am still recovering from the huge step backwards of suddenly being able to charge my laptop and phone using the same charging cable.
That was never a problem for me. Having two cables is not exactly a nightmare. Usb-c is invferior because the male end is on the device, when it breaks the device breaks. Lightning has the opposite, so you may need to replace a cable but there is no connector sticking out of the device subject to constant wear and tear. Lightning by default is faster, has more copper strands and interference resistance. Regardelss of all this, you people's problem is everything is politics, you used the term "backwards" as if it was a progressivism thing. Apple is not a public service company, it makes really popular commercial products, they are free to make inferior (in your opinion) products and sell them at any price.

Apple? I am sure they have bad apps, but by bad I meant malicious as in malware that ruins people's lives. It's just not comparable with android. Android is still a freaking wild west. There is also the question of apple and its users wanting it gatekept. I used android for over a decade before switching to ios, i vehemently hate apple as a company yet the quality of their product is so good, I consider making apple like android a collective punishment of apple users. Android is a nightmare for me, bur again I ask why do you not just use android and let us apple users alone to vote with our wallet. Why do you prefer totalitarian tyranny?
> Selling iPhones in Europe is entirely optional for Apple. But if they choose to, they better comply with local consumer laws.
I agree but EU law as it standa is socialist tyranny. EU consumers can buy android and force apple to use usb-c. But the tyranny here is that both android and ios makers are in the US and EU law makers' decision is affecting the US and the world.
Honestly, I did think socialism done moderately was a good thing but this sort of stuff has turned me sour. Oppression and tyranny don't suddenly become a good thing because you are popular or have good intentions.
It is ridiculous to me that you are telling me I can't pay a company to give me goods I like with my hard earned money because you are my f@cking nanny and get to decide what I am allowed to like??
> Usb-c is invferior because the male end is on the device, when it breaks the device breaks. Lightning has the opposite, so you may need to replace a cable but there is no connector sticking out of the device subject to constant wear and tear.
It's the other way around. Lightning has the springs making the connection (which can wear out) on the device end; USB-C has them in the plugs/cables.
Both are very durable ports; USB-C just has the huge advantage of being an open and already ubiquitous standard, as well as supporting video and much higher data rates natively.
> Lightning by default is faster
No. Lightning always uses USB 2 speeds between iOS device and computer; only the USB 3 camera adapter can optionally use USB 3 speeds with some Lightning devices acting as hosts. USB-C supports both USB 2 and USB 3 in either role. In other words, Lightning is at most just as fast as (and usually slower than) USB-C.
> Apple is not a public service company, it makes really popular commercial products, they are free to make inferior (in your opinion) products and sell them at any price.
My opinion? Not sure who you're arguing with here. Almost all my computing devices are from Apple. Their build quality and feature set is miles ahead of the competition.
I can believe that, and at the same time believe that Apple is leveraging the platform side of their business in a way that might be bad for consumers and the market as a whole.
Not going to comment on any of the "the EU is socialist" claims, because besides being factually absurd, it's the wrong lens in this discussion. The US might be branding itself a bit differently, but in the end, just like the EU it's a heavily regulated market. Where they differ are the domains which are more and less heavily regulated.
> But the tyranny here is that both android and ios makers are in the US and EU law makers' decision is affecting the US and the world.

Bring back public drawing and quartering. This time, do it in the middle of a stadium and put it on YouTube.
If each count of fraud by a person is worth 1 day in prison, what is 20 million counts of fraud worth?
My my math, 20,000,000 counts of fraud is worth 54,794.52 years is prison.
Let's consider capital punishment.
