DALL-E 3 censors mild leftist prompts

4 points by lukev ↗ HN
Prompt: 5 students in a softly lit bar, discussing art and labor with drinks and notes.

Response: I'm unable to generate images as your request didn't align with the content policy. Please feel free to adjust or provide a new prompt.

The context for this: I'm in a discussion group on AI, automation, art and labor, was trying to generate some example images for the class.

Is it just me, or is this wildly, inappropriate restrictive? Even for OpenAI?

My guess is that it's not because of the possible political context, but because it's interpreting "soft lighting" as inferring something sexual. Does it work if you get rid of the "and labor" part?
Yes, if I use the exact same prompt but omit "and labor" it works fine.

Also, "soft lighting" is an extremely standard prompt term and no image generator has a problem with it.

That's interesting - what happens if you go in the other direction and replace "and labor" with something like "and free market economics"?
Funny how it's only not wildly inappropriate when it's censoring your political opinions. When it was other's it was fine and dandy.
What makes you believe leftists the only ones with something to say about labor?
Labor also means having babies, so it may assume you are looking for nudity. Rephrase to be unambiguous about the kind of labor.
