OpenAI had a chance of becoming one of the big tech companies, a genuine alternative, which they threw away in pursuit of AGI and then a deal with Microsoft, when they realized that AGI wasn't coming soon enough.
AGI is the latest addition to the never ending extreme semantic disagreement landscape. What is AGI? Sentience? Smarter general intelligence than the smartest human? Ability to have original thought and produce novel, viable ideas? The ability to invent? Skynet? An LLM that can pass the Turing test? Just a very impressive LLM incapable of original thought? Take your pick.
It's a marketing term to convince gullable company execs that they can replace critical staff with "AGI" which they will do, pay them selves a bonus, find out it doesn't work and waste millions just to rehire the same kind of staff that they already had before. Rinse and repeat...
