Ask HN: How Is Yahoo Still Functioning and Relevant in Today's Tech Landscape?

8 points by absqueued ↗ HN
Hello HN community, I've been reflecting on the evolution of major tech companies and noticed that Yahoo, despite its ups and downs, is still operational.

In an era dominated by Google, Facebook, MS and now OpenAI, how is Yahoo managing to stay afloat? What are their primary revenue streams and user engagement strategies in today's market?

I'm curious about any insights or insider perspectives on this.

They focus on business users.

- Yahoo Finance is the big one. It has few competitors, and is probably their primary revenue stream.

- Yahoo News is still doing well.

- Yahoo Answers helped Yahoo stay relevant for a very long time, but it is dead now, replaced by Quora.

- Also, I think they do fantasy sports.

Do they have some sort of TV presence or its just internet?

I do not live in the US so have no idea, I do see their Youtube videos much alike a news broadcasters.

Maybe I’ve missed some new development but I don’t think any free stock charts have gotten better than what Yahoo Finance provides, in fact Yahoo’s stock charts are probably better than what your broker provides. Jump in the forums and you will still find thousands of right wing oldsters who want the government to stay out of their Medicare.
finance.yahoo.com is the only part of yahoo I use. I recall when google finance was announced and it was utter horse shit and overrun with low quality auto-generated news spam. On a lark I checked if Google had shut it down yet but actually it looks a lot better now. No historical stock prices though :/
Well, it's not really a tech company anymore. It's now a media company. It has a few fairly popular media brands/sites and a couple of legacy products that still have some users. Some folks still use Yahoo! Mail.
Their investment in Alibaba did pretty well!
