Interesting that they are moving to Discord while they have Telegram and IRC. They should just move to IRC. Pretty ironic that a hardened, security focused OS uses Discord as their main communications platform.
(GrapheneOS community mod here) GrapheneOS still has and will continue having Matrix as an option, at least for the time being. IRC and Telegram have also been options for a very long time, but Matrix was prioritized and considered the main platform, and that which the project promoted as the platform the community should gather at. IRC, Telegram, Matrix (and now Discord) are bridged together.

People who would rather not use Discord to interact with the community can use the other available options. Discord isn't the "main" communications platform, or even currently the main community hub, but it may become that in the future. It will depend on where the community gathers, and what the experience is for people joining the community as well as the moderation team alike.

Unfortunately, as much as the project wanted to prioritize and promote Matrix (and it has), the constant issues, both technical (state resets, bricks, lag, random bugs) and those that have to do with the lack of available moderation tools have pretty much made the decision for the project. We reported these issues close to over a year ago now and went through multiple iterations of our biggest rooms after dealing with state reset bugs bricking the rooms. We dealt with the subpar moderation tools by handling raids basically manually without any of the advanced features that other platforms offer. But there comes a time where you have to consider your community's benefit.

Regarding Telegram and IRC, as I mentioned above, those have been and will continue to remain options, but they all have their own sets of significant drawbacks in multiple areas. That said, it's still the community's choice which channel to use, as they're all bridged with one another.

Of course, we also have our own discussion forum at https://discuss.grapheneos.org and also have a Subreddit all the same, though we prefer that people use the former over the latter.

I hope that provides some more context behind the decision, and helps conceptualize why it may not be as "ironic" as one might initially seem.

IRC and Telegram aren't mentioned on grapheneos.org/contact though. Also, Telegram users can't send messages (at least I wasn't able to a year back, things may have changed).
