iOS 17: white text on gray background is a bad idea

My phone just updated to iOS 17, and now when a contact is shown, the top half of the screen is white on gray instead of white on black, making it harder to read, especially for people with poor eyesight. They also use this gray background now when the phone rings. I have high contrast enabled under Accessibility, yet here we are.

It seems like every time I do any kind of Apple OS update these days, either iOS or MacOS, there is something I use frequently that I really dislike, making me sorry I allowed the upgrade.

In the 30-odd years I spent as a software documentor, the amount of effort expended on designing software for accessibility tended to hover around 0%.

Me too.

This is a disgusting 'upgrade'. When I look at a 'contacts' screen, I want to see information, not a big empty splodge of gray taking up half of the information-space.
