I think that the mangler deleted the relevant part of the address, namely the anchor: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Erwin_Schr%C3%B6dinger#Sexual_.... (I'm not sure whether this is something that's relevant for HN—or, rather, something that is more relevant now to HN than at any other time—but, as we're always rightly reminded, what's relevant for HN is what interests HN-ers, so I'll keep my opinion inside parentheses.)
Freud "invented" Oedipus' complex because most of his patients were describing not their fantasms but their actual sexual abuse at the hands of their father...
A story has to be written on how prevalent child sexual abuse was in Europe at the turn of the XXth century. Was it as prevalent before? Did it come after the trauma of WWI? Was it a "cultural" movement brought by the stiff values of bourgeoisie? Was it just mechanically spreading - abused children growing up to become abusive parents? There seems to be an anomaly that warrants some research.
In the past, Caltech renamed a building named after Millikan because he was a proponent of eugenics. Is it really right to judge the past by contemporary values?
Is the use of the word “rape” in regards to the 17 year old statutory or general?
Rms got cancelled for similar sentiments but throwaway: is it really fair to refer to “grooming” a 14 year old and having sex with her at 17 as pedophilia? Even today and certainly throughout history attitudes have fluctuated greatly in regards to girls that have gone through puberty.
Last I checked in the uk 16 is okay. And even in America you can get married to someone under 18 with parental consent.
The age of 18 really is arbitrary or at least culturally variable.
We really should distinguish between pre and post puberty when discussing these things. They are not the same and conflating them only undermines the moral/social/political weight that should rightfully so be directed against actual pedophiles.
American popular culture is filled with references to high school girls sleeping with older men. Is it just okay when you are a rockstar or friends with the right people? Or it’s only okay to criticize it if your not?
My grandparents got married at 16 and 21. And many of yours probably did too if your my age.
Congratulations, you noticed that American popular culture is deeply misogynistic. And that many, many people have not been okay with that for decades.
In the early 20th century, 14 was the age of consent in Germany, but when he worked in Switzerland the age of consent was 16. Likewise, when he fled to Ireland, it was 16.
From what I can tell, rape in Germany in the 1920s involved physically coerced sex. And only when done out of wedlock (ew!). No idea what this case was.
> We really should distinguish between pre and post puberty when discussing these things.
That is arbitrary, too. There's a lot more marriage and sex than that. I remember patients at our county care facility with developmental problems needing to prove that they were emotionally able to have "real relationships" (including sex), for example. Who's to say that a post-pubescent 18 year old is able?
