What’s a good countertop water filter/filtration device that people have found?

Is RO the only answer or are there any good carbon based filters?

From what I understand RO is the best, but charcoal is a good alternative for those with tighter budgets. I bought one of the counter top models with a water carafe and I've been very happy with it
I just bought a Clearly Filtered under sink filter system after a lot of research. It outputs via the main faucet.

I recently sold my condo and am now temporarily renting, In my condo I had a RO system, but was unable to find one that didn’t require permanent modifications to the plumbing and/or countertop - which is a big no no when renting usually. The Clearly Filtered system does not require anything permanent at least.

That said, I do know some people who are renting and still install RO systems. They usually say they’ll deal with the consequences with the owner later, or just say they don’t care and the owner can go fuck themselves.

I used to just buy a couple 5 gallon jugs and refill them at the market. Then I would keep a 2 gallon dispenser in the fridge. Now I have an RO unit and just refill at my sink.

Although, one thing to keep in mind is that RO units typically waste a lot of water. For every gallon of filtrate they produce, they also dump 5 gallons down the drain.
