I don't mind pre-hire tests or assignments: if properly done, it can be a great way of sifting through the sizable chunk of applications from the flat-out incompetent while minimizing the reply time for those who get through the filter.
But I do mind pre-hire assignments that are a) unpaid and b) take more than a couple hours. It's not only disrespectful and lazy on the part of the employer, it's stupid. This approach is going to select for unemployed candidates with a lot of free time and desperation.
