As someone living in the vicinity I can especially recommend Planten & Blomen, a winding park that goes for 6 km nearly all the way down to the river Elbe. Also has a small japanese garden.
Pardon? I walked to CCH from my hotel every day, a nice 15-20 minute walk. I would go through the gardens more often than up near the train station. I also noticed that German businesses/buildings tend to really crank the heat, so oftentimes during the conference I would need to step outside to cool off. The outdoor area just outside with all the curved/arched metal structures was a nice place to stop and enjoy a cup of coffee, looking out at the big antenna building in the distance. I think the gardens are great! I would see the Airbus beluga planes coming in for landing which was really cool to witness as well. The botanical building had been closed for the year, which was a bummer, but all the surrounding areas were really quite nice to explore. Huge tall oak trees, lots of foliage, everything was covered in a wet moss. I loved it.
Quite a few people in my social circle that I'd consider essential to the event and its culture have stated they will not attend due to the lack of any COVID precautions, announced in a blog post that was a bit tone deaf. That might factor in.
According to [0,1] they are requesting known-ill people to stay home, attendees to wear masks if possible, attendees to self-test beforehand, and they will be providing masks and self-test kits at the venue too.
Considering the current pandemic state of Covid, that sounds fairly reasonable?
> All official infection control regulations will of course be implemented. The CCC asks all participants to consider their own awareness of the health risks of large events before purchasing a ticket.
It's just a very weird way of saying "we're doing nothing, if you are at risk, don't come". The link goes to a government website that says there are no regulations. The middle sentence was edited in later, as was the last.
There was a bit of an expectation that there would be a better baseline to allow for individuals with higher risk to attend. And some former organizers that also remarked how the yearly "Congress-Seuche" (essentially getting some sort of flu every year, guaranteed) could be avoided pretty easily too as a nice side effect.
> Chaos Communication Congress tickets still available
Why, though? I mean the congress was sold out very quickly in the years before and now there are still tickets? I find this... unusual. Did I miss something?
I watched a recent 3C presentation, which was about gender selection in UIs, presenting different websites with dropdowns allowing for male/female, male/female/other and some dating app that had 72 options, then arguing that "that's not enough and it should instead be free text because "new genders are discovered all the time". Presenter was absolutely insufferable as well, especially during the Q&A, misinterpreting questions and attacking people who asked completely innocent questions. Yeah, I'd rather watch some videos selectively afterwards than go to the conference and get stuck in something like that. But who knows, maybe they have a bigger venue and more tickets available this time around.
Interestingly, I can't find the video on YT anymore.
CCC has been taken over by sly narcissists that abuse and take over relevant discussions and previously useful mechanisms to forcefully drive away anyone that “opposes“ their violent perspective and actions. (CoC, awareness, neurodiversity, gender, etc -- all on their own very good topics and mechanisms, but now damaged almost beyond repair)
No wonder people are staying away. It is a highly toxic environment. Be careful.
If you watch the latest documentary through that lens, you will see it. It's in the open, for anyone to see who wants to see it. (Alles ist Eins. Ausser die Null.)
Posting this anonymously out of fear for my professional and personal life. I have seen enough people whose reputation was permanently destroyed and who lost almost everything (some even their sanity due to professional gaslighting) simply for stating their opinion and for pointing out the violence.

I'm not sure where you are from, but there aren't anymore COVID precautions at all at any events in Germany. Not sure why the CCC should be different?
