I watched the 'insurrection' live on tv. Trump had a peaceful speech before the event and there is now absolute proof that the police allowed many of these people to enter the capitol building.
Trump is allowed to dispute the results of the election and went the legal route of going to court (and stepped down from office willingly). The interesting thing is that of the small percentage of cases that went in front of a judge, Trump won the vast majority of them.
This is bullshit. If Trump is going to be blamed for his followers actions, the current administration should all be in prison for pushing people to riot in the summer of 2020 and doing nothing about it (Kamala Harris bailed many of the people out with her own money and 50 people died..much more than this 'insurrection'). This won't happen, because it has nothing to do with Democracy or rule of law..but lording power over political enemies you despise.
His goal was to disrupt the peaceful transfer of power. When American democracy is at it’s weakest, he thought he could bully America into throwing out the results of the election.
I’m glad he went to court, but the reason so few cases went to a jury is because they were frivolous. The cases were dismissed due to lack of evidence. Wikipedia shows one out of fifty-five cases were ruled in favor of Trump. Two are still ongoing.
The idea that Trump stepped down willingly _after_ the failed insurrection is laughable. He was out of options. He tried stopping the vote counts and failed. He tried stopping the vote certifications and failed. He tried bypassing the elector process to steal the electoral votes of states he certainly lost but failed. He attempted to delay or stop official congressional proceedings to stay in office, but failed.
