Show HN: Sunnybox – An Email API for Effortless IMAP Integration (sunnybox.io)

5 points by hit8run ↗ HN
Hello HN,

I'm Bijan, a software developer and the creator of Sunnybox (https://sunnybox.io). I developed Sunnybox to make email integrations more straightforward for developers, especially in terms of interacting with IMAP servers.

Sunnybox is an Email API that offers:

- Easy integration with IMAP accounts.

- Webhooks for real-time email notifications.

-JSON:API format responses (https://jsonapi.org) for better standardization.

Built using Ruby on Rails, Sunnybox is designed to offer a powerful yet easy-to-use solution for developers managing email systems.

I'd really appreciate your feedback on:

- The API's user-friendliness and efficiency.

- Features you think could be added or improved.

- Any other thoughts or suggestions from a developer's perspective.

Looking forward to your insights and discussions!

P.S.: For the HN community, I'm offering free developer accounts to try Sunnybox. If interested, just ping me on Twitter (@BijanRahnema), and I'll get you set up.

Looks cool! Logo seems… Linear-ular… lol
Thanks for the feedback and the pun! :D I can see the resemblance you're mentioning. It wasn't intentional, but I suppose great minds in design think alike! The focus for Sunnybox's logo was to convey simplicity and efficiency, much like our service. In the inside the sun and around it the box. Appreciate your thoughts!
Yes, the world needs it. But the insurmountable obstacle for me and many others is the fact my inbox content flows in clear text through your servers.
Thank you for raising this important concern. I completely understand the apprehensions regarding inbox content and privacy. In Sunnybox, ensuring the security and confidentiality of user data is my top priority.

To safeguard your information, I've implemented several security measures. For instance, API keys are handled with extreme care, akin to passwords, and are shown only once. The only data stored and encrypted in the database are the necessary credentials – your emails are not synced to our database. This 'minimal data necessary' approach extends to handling log files, which are regularly filtered and cleared.

My goal is to offer a service that's not just efficient, but also highly secure and trustworthy. GDPR compliance is a must as Screen Island GmbH is located in Germany as are the Sunnybox servers.

I'm further continually working on enhancing Sunnybox's security features and am always open to feedback or specific concerns. Ensuring peace of mind in this category is paramount for me.

Additionally, for those seeking extra control, there's the option to deploy Sunnybox on your own hardware, giving you complete management over your data.

When I started with https://emailengine.app, a similar product, I also considered releasing it as a SaaS. But looking at the competition, it seemed too complicated for me (just look at the compliance list for Nylas Email API https://www.nylas.com/security/#compliance ). Will be interesting to see how it works out for you. Good luck!
Thanks for your insights! It's great to see others, like emailengine, navigating similar paths in the email integration space. Your product is impressive and was indeed an inspiration in some aspects.

I agree, the landscape, especially considering compliance and security (as highlighted by Nylas), is complex. With Sunnybox, my aim is to offer a simpler yet secure alternative, focusing on ease of use and essential features, which I believe there's a niche for.

I'm navigating these challenges with a 'learn and adapt as I go' approach, aiming to keep things as streamlined as possible while ensuring compliance and security.

It's definitely an interesting journey, and I'm curious to see how it unfolds too. Appreciate the good luck wishes, and I extend the same to you!

Happy customer of emailengine. Just wanted to drop in and say thanks for a great product.
The logo is Linear's logo but inverted?
Thanks for pointing this out. I wasn't aware of Linear.app before, but having checked their site now, I can definitely see the resemblance, particularly with their app icon style. It was completely unintentional. Designing a unique and recognizable logo in today's crowded digital landscape can be challenging, but it's crucial. I'll look into this and consider a redesign to ensure Sunnybox's identity is distinct and unique. Appreciate your observation!
Yes, Nylas provides this, and also Aurinko: https://www.aurinko.io/blog/imap-restful-api-gateway/

Nylas is a sync engine though so all client data will end up on their servers first and then will be served to you. Aurinko tries to remain API gateway (pass-through) as much as possible.

Good luck with the project.

"Nylas is a sync engine though so all client data will end up on their servers first and then will be served to you."

That might hold truth for the old Nylas. The new Nylas is coming soon with a lot of cool things.
