Considering they are known to simply prowl the neighbourhood and kill wildlife out of boredom is more than enough reason to not do this.

Perhaps if you live on a farm. Then at least there's a reason to keep mice and birds out of the barn.

It's really not about keeping them so much out of the barn, although that is kind of a side effect, farm cats keep mice and other vermin out of the house.
