Ask HN: How to reconcile small incremental change with a view to architecture

My background is not engineering. But due to the ubiquity of computer systems I have taught myself coding and it has served me well.

One recurring problem in my experience thought is small firms just gluing saas offerings together with no design. Just stumbling through the immediate problems.

Managers and bosses don't want to hear about "architecture". They barely want to hear about problems and proposed solutions. They want an estimate and a working solution by deadline.

How to reconcile both ends? I spend a lot of time and energy on this problem and I would love to improve my skills there so I can be more efficient when dealing with such gaps.
