Phys.org probably doesn't know about it either. Most advertisement schemes just involve the website-owner putting up Google AdSense windows around their site, and then advertisers bidding on the placement per-user. That shirt was probably destined to be marketed to you (or a similar person) on another website if it didn't show up there.
Subject matter aside, Phys.org is probably as confused as you are. Reach out to them and double-check that this was the intended behavior if you're still unsure.
