Ask HN: Voice only messaging, unable to read

I have a friend who has lost the ability to read but he can hold a conversation quite well. At the moment he is unable to process his messages on his own. What is a good way to help him? Text to speech and speech to text is a bit clunky for him to initialize and setup. He can still type. Any thoughts or suggestions?
