Ask HN: How many bookmarks do you have?

5 points by Akcium ↗ HN
I installed an app for managing bookmarks in Chrome and found out that I have approximately 1500 of them.

Out of curiosity, how many do you have?

Close to 3gb, however many that is in the various database formats I have yet to merge and make sane. That’s 20 years worth and few duplicates. My safari bookmarks alone started breaking iCloud last year, engineering team whoever that is can’t fix it reliably as the issue is ticketed if I ever complain and weeks of follow up result in the cloud database maintenance and sync malfunctioning.
3Gb?! Woah How many is that O_O
Probably includes metadata like favicon encoded in base64
For work, probably around 150. A mixture of documentation, automated jobs, repos, and tools.

For personal, way less. Mostly just finance. I tend to just use auto complete.

I'm always afraid to lose something valuable that I might be willing to read years after.

But it never happens

I made a simple but specialized web-based bookmark manager two weeks ago. I just asked and found I have 687 bookmarks.

In my browser? Two. "Import Bookmarks" and "Getting Started" that Firefox happily recreates and syncs to my account every time I do a fresh install :(

In my Zettlekasten 5374... Wow, that's... more than I thought.

Though some of those would be from Omnivore imports Obsidian of webpages. I just counted instances of "https" in the folder it syncs to.

I tend to save pages that I've kept the tab open for more than a day so that my brain agrees that I've "done" it.

I've also starred 200ish repos on GitHub. Does that count as a bookmark?

None. I collect links to READMEs, categorized by topics. In a way, HN works too as a link collector; people here have a good taste for all things technology.
