One of the most exciting areas of research in recent years is Cross-technology communication (CTC), which allows heterogeneous systems to directly communicate with each other. Clever hacks allows commercial wifi devices to emulate bluetooth signals with software, and vice versa: vanilla bluetooth devices can also communicate natively with wifi access points without any hardware modification.
