Sort of related, but we used to be completely free of cable, satellite, and streaming for a time, just using OTA antenna picking up all major local networks (covering ABC, NBC, CBS, and FOX, among a number of smaller networks). We had DVR set up, so we never missed anything, and easily skipped commercials.
This was all possible via the fabulous Windows Media Center on Windows 7 and 8.
We also used it to frequently watch our shared folder of digitized home videos, since it was so well integrated.
Until MS stopped supporting it.
Nothing has been able to match the simplicity and good UX, at least not for how we used it.
Now we’ve succumbed to subscribing to streaming, and a separate app for watching home videos that nobody ever uses because the integration and UX just isn’t as good.
