Just took a quick look at the video and the emphasis on documentation and open source software is essential for me: I have piles of moderately exotic hardware that I never got to utilize because of lack of good documentation, so it became obsolete before I got it to work.
Also the point about leaky abstractions, the two API approach makes sense to me.
