Looking for a Mentor

Aye All,

My name is Daniel, I study cybersecurity heading towards digital forensics. I am creating this post in the hope to find a mentor in the field that could help me steer my ideas into a practical direction and perhaps help me recognize the impracticality of them.

Let me know if you know someone.

Thanks.

Not in security but I recommend 1) Put an email address in your user page, and 2) Maybe remove "Cyber" from the wording because I read from somewhere security people don't like that (I could be wrong so do your own research).
thanks! I added a email address on my profile.

well there is a lot that goes into the field tbh, I have been studying multiple areas and tuning them for security related cases. So, by extension, I can see how experts would not like the term but that’s what I will have on my degree lol

I think you could re-submit this as a general Ask HN question to get better visibility:

"How to find/identify a mentor at different stages of your career?" or "How to be a better mentor/mentee?"

I'd love to have a mentor as well, but I couldn't tell what I would have to offer to said mentor or how to compensate them for time/advice.

In my opinion, you should first be clear about your ambitions in your field of interest and how a mentor would even be able to help you.

The field of digital forensics is rather small (in comparison to general infosec)you could basically do it like an OSINT investigation:

- look up instructors or book authors in this field (Amazon, goodreads, pluralsight etc.)

- identify those who are active on social media (who are they talking to)

- become a fixture inside these circles

- identify local companies or meetups in this field

- connect with more experienced professionals in real life

- voice your wish to find a mentor

You just MENTORED them into how to find a mentor. :-)
