Tell HN: Create knowledge silos and haunted forests
I just want to implore this community, in the wake of mass layoffs and downward salary pressure due to decisions well beyond our control, that you strongly consider not documenting your weird little hack or whatever thing you did off the clock to keep the system running that your boss doesnt even pretend to care about and that should be documented for the next guy to come along.
I don’t advocate this lightly. I believe in strong documentation and leaving an environment better than the state in which you found it. However, since we are clearly seen by this current market as replaceable, interchangeable parts - show them you’re not. If you get fired or laid off - open the door for consulting the same company a few years down the road.
They need our labor. Do not let them convince you otherwise.
