Ask HN: File sharing/organizing for small teams with multiple OSes

looking for suggestions on file server solutions for sharing and keeping files organized in 1-3 person teams with 1-10 linux/windows/mac workstations. not talking about code but other files like documents, assets, media files etc. cloud solutions not an option.

also what hardware to use for serving files that is easy to expand. a real server or a NAS.

If all in house…

Samba is typical.

However I have heard that Windows can support NFS too.

And in fact I have read that you can setup both over the same files.

back in 1995 or so i used samba but it was prone to crashing.
