GMRS has absolutely nothing wrong with it. We're clearly in the era where if you don't understand the alternative options, you're going to get scammed on fundamental featuresets.
Upstream, if you're an ordinary civilian (read: "non-technical founder") trying to solve a problem, you either have to disregard prior art (in this case GMRS) or gleefully dive into product development without any research into the state of the art.
Tragically, there is still a market for things-with-apps that will continue to fuel the scammatron that itself thrives on cost savings via wholly inadequate engineering. You seriously trust a company that can't implement security to ship an impact-rated helmet? Conversely, why would you trust a helmet company to do anything touching authn/z?
