Why risk the reputational damage of misleading people by presenting your business as a non-profit?

There's no rule associating .org with nonprofits, even though it's a common perception. Some people register a .org because the .com isn't available. Others make sure they have many top-level versions of their organization name registered to prevent others from doing so.
Right - it's the common perception part that bothers me.

Actually, .net and .org used to be domain protectors for your .com!
