Tell HN: DDoS Attack on Overleaf

Around 12 hours ago, Overleaf reported ongoing DDOS attacks on their servers; after stopping the first wave, more attacks followed and currently server performance is degraded.

It is interesting to study reactions at r/latex and twitter; several users expressed serious worry about projects due that exist only on the Overleaf servers.

I use overleaf extensively. It’s a very good project.

What’s the motivation of attackers, bringing down a useful service? It’s probably not a hugely profitable service.
