Write me your nostalgic memories about the old web that make you sad or happy. Explain how the websites look, content production without chasing fame, and sincerity.

I remember typing http://altavista.digital.com almost every time I opened the browser.

It was almost a ceremony to type all that instead of using a bookmark. As it loaded, I could search the Internet. This was life before Google. I would then check some FTP sites, some Gopher sites for more files and information.

In the middle 90s you also had Virtual Reality using VRML sites that people made, allowing you to navigate through a 3D world. An early metaverse, if you will. That was fun!

I miss the old website designs and content sharing styles.
In late 1994, I downloaded a description of HTML, printed it on my Deskjet 550c, and then built a webpage on my free student account at UF.

By early 1995, my linked content no longer loaded.

Link rot was there from the beginning, except of course the phrase "link rot" had yet to be coined.

I don't miss the old web. There's infinitely more quirky weird niche information today...just go to Youtube. Or the front page of HN. The old web was so useless, hampster dance was a thing.

Good luck.

Struggle with gopher and wonder how back link worked.
