I don't know the Canadian political situation, is there actually a chance this gets passed?

This is a proposed amendment to the 'Online Harms Act' and says hate crime 'under this act' so the changes are to enable possible life sentences for online speech, correct? We can all agree these things are bad, but calling for life imprisonment for hate speech (even for advocating genocide) seems utterly unhinged...

As far as I can tell the life imprisonment is for people advocating genocide. It is not clear to me that this just allows any so-called hate crime to be punished with life in prison, which seems pretty authoritarian. But the thing is it's pretty difficult to understand just what exactly the changes being proposed are. From a cursory reading of the bill it is not obvious what exactly the implications are here.

As far as how likely it is to pass, I would say not impossible. The liberals have an outsize influence on how the country is run and will until next year at least, unless Trudeau calls an early election (which by all accounts he would lose right now).

No, if you search through it it adds 'imprisonment for life' to both the 'advocating genocide' offence and also the 'Offence motivated by hatred' under the act (presumably meaning online speech) section separately.
It's seems to leave a lot of room for interpretation. Is _any_ hate crime punishable by life imprisonment? I would hope no judges in this country would agree with such an interpretation, but you never know
>Advocating genocide

>318 (1) Every person who advocates or promotes genocide is guilty of an indictable offence and liable to imprisonment for life.

>Offence motivated by hatred

>320. 1001 (1) Everyone who commits an offence under this Act or any other Act of Parliament, if the commission of the offence is motivated by hatred based on race, national or ethnic origin, language, colour, religion, sex, age, mental or physical disability, sexual orientation, or gender identity or expression, is guilty of an indictable offence and liable to imprisonment for life.

Not a serious country.

That’s pretty wild. Seems like it creates perverse incentive to commit physical hate crimes. If the consequences between advocacy and action are sufficiently proximal, it becomes optimal choose the course with the most “benefit” to the actor.
At this point, anyone supporting the current regime in Canada is commiting a hate crime.
I suppose this doesn’t surprise me anymore. Our current government has a very heavy legislative hand and has a certain self-righteous and controlling tendencies. It borderlines on micromanagement and has led to massive government expansion. We’re talking a 30-40% increase in order to regulate and administer all of these new bills and programs. We’ve nearly doubled our federal debt yet completely tanked due to all of the benefits of micromanaging as you’d expect.
This country is actually brain rot freedom of speech is slowly falling away and even if Pierre gets put in to office there’s nothing he can do and I’m sure he doesn’t want to do any thing cause he a conservative copy of Trudeau Remember once a law gets put in its really hard to take it out
