You can also do terrible, probably wrong napkin math, it was way too low:
- $4MM sale [1]
- ~7000 posts/pages [2]
- So DO buying at ~$600 an article
- Assuming writers were paid like $200-300 a post, DO basically paid double market rate for each article from CSS-Tricks. Or, at a +$300 gain to CSS-Tricks.
- Except they get his brand, their already edited and vetted for quality, they have established search PageRank, existing traffic, the blog pots had huge engagement (near impossible to build community aspect), established revenue streams, and much-much more.
Coyier is an absolute legend. Hate to see it end up this way. A cleaner break would have been probably double the sale price. I don't fault him. We all have regrets.
In retrospect, the biggest L though is a high traffic and respected blog like this is a perfect vehicle for onboarding of new technologies / ideas.
So like a new JS library, new CSS thing, new SaaS business, to absolutely take off. Not something like Digital Ocean.
