Ask HN: Why is new Gmail so slow?

Google finally pulled the plug on old (HTML) gmail and forced me to switch to new gmail. It is soooo slow. It literally takes over 5s to load. Before, the HTML version always loaded instantly, like maybe 0.3s or so. Is it because the people who knew how to make fast email clients left, or is it just usual bloat and feature creep? Or are there layers upon layers of abstraction in new gmail?

It's the worst design - akin to the crap that yahoo did, trying to make everything appeal to kids. We're not 12 years old, and HTML is king! The new layout is far more cluttered and the constant pop-ups are retarded! It's their way to install all their spyware so they can control what is said between people! They are insane criminals.
