The link in OP is a link to Microsoft's own instructions, which appear to apply to multiple different updates.

I'm sharing this just because I find this to be absolutely insane. Normal people, such as your grandmother, are now expected to manually repartition their disk using command line tools in order to fix an issue with Windows Update.

The issue was caused by Microsoft's own mistakes. I encountered it in the beginning of January, and I expected Microsoft to figure out another update path by now. It's been at least 80 days. But nope. Grandmothers, go learn about diskpart.

The update itself (KB5034441) is completely irrelevant for 99% of users, and yet Microsoft is pushing it for all Windows users. For the remaining 1% of users who would benefit from the update, it does not seem at all clear to me if the benefits from this update outweigh the risks from manually repartitioning disks. I would argue that they do not, especially for non technical people who are likely to make mistakes on the command line and wipe out all of their data accidentally.

Here is a link to a thread where 9791 people (as of this writing) have clicked the "i have the same problem" button. The thread is currently locked: https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/all/instal...

This is shameful. It demonstrates how little Microsoft actually cares about data loss for its customers.
