Mishandling classified documents? Did Assange, an Australian citizen, somehow have a US security clearance?
It seems more likely this nonsense is being floated to help justify an illegal extradition to continue the United States Government's unconstitutional persecution of him.
Yea, even if he were freed, he’d have to have armed bodyguards forever, travel in the Popemobile wherever he went, never get on an airplane, and so on. Not a great way to live.
It’s amazing how much misery the US is willing to put just one guy through, simply to dissuade others from releasing documents on the government’s bad behavior.

As an Australian, that would be ... the first time I've heard of that sort of thing being necessary here. We have prime ministers going for they daily constitutional walks down the street not so long ago.
